都市広場に奥を生み出す空間装置
横浜で開催されたアートコンパスという芸術祭の会場に設置した屋外展示のための空間です。サーカスのテント幕が永遠に奥まで続くような、中心がないタマネギのような空間です。平面形が渦巻きのように見えるので、「ぐるぐる」と呼ばれるようになりました。5mもの距離を紐のように細い鉄骨で支える不思議な構造体は、地面に固定することなく全体が成立しています。みなとみらいの大きな都市広場に、明快な平面計画によって奥を生み出すことに成功しました。
A device which creates depth in a city square
This project is an exhibition space created for the 2019 “Compass Yokohama” art festival. The space is demarcated by a fabric, meant to evoke a circus tent. It is an onion shape spiral in plan and it appears to the observer as if the space has no end. That is where the name of the project came from – “GURU GURU”. This is a Japanese onomatopoeic word which means “round and round”. The structure of the installation is a system of very thin steel post and beam frames each spanning 5 meters. The dimensions of the structural members, closer to wires than to actual columns and beams, make for a curious, light appearance. Because it was a temporary structure the columns were not affixed to the ground, so the structure was weight down. We are happy that with a simple and clear means we were able to create depth in an otherwise flat space such as Minatomirai Square.
