まちを再生する小さな拠点
空き家対策や移住促進など、地方には様々な課題がありますが、財政的な限界や人的資源などから逆算しても、多くのことができるわけではありません。そこで私たちが考える地域再生の方法論は、「大きな目的地とたくさんの小さな居場所をつくる」ということです。大きな目的地とは、そこへ行くわかりやすいモチベーションです。そして、それを受け入れる「小さな目的地」の種類を増やすこと。地域の食材を提供する小さなレストランやおばあちゃんが営む揚げパン屋さん。そうしたスモールビジネスの種類を増やす必要があります。
地域ラボとSERENOは、道を挟んだ斜向かいに位置しています。地域ラボは、研究拠点であるため床をあげていますが、SERENOはまちがそのまま延長する土間のスペースとしています。地域ラボとSERENOの間には、かつて漁師たちが作業していた平場があり、こうした小さな建築の関係性が、まちを再生していくことを願っています。
A small outpost for town regeneration
Japan`s rural regions face many challenges, and various measures such as reuse of empty buildings and encouragement of migration from the cities are being introduced. However, financial and human resources are limited. In reality there are not many things that can be done. We can sum-up our approach to the discussion of local revitalization as “Create a destination and populating it with a variety of small, welcoming places”. What we mean by that is to create a place where people would like to go, and fill this place with a variety of local services and products, which would welcome visitors. For example, a restaurant which uses local products or a desert shop run by local grandmothers. There is a need to create more such small businesses, which simultaneously and support the locality and express its character.
Our project was the conversion of two empty buildings into a restaurant and research laboratory. They are located diagonally across a narrow road. We think that the physical relationship of the space with the city is very important. The laboratory is a work space and is raised one step above the ground, signaling it`s more private character. The restaurant on the other hand is a gathering space it needs to be an extension of the town itself, so its floor level is lowered, flush with the street. The two buildings are flanking a small open space which used to be where fishermen would perform various tasks. We hope that such carefully thought of architectural relationships would make such meaningful spaces a base for regeneration.

東京大学生産技術研究所川添研究室加太分室地域ラボ
およそ築100年の漁具蔵を改修しました。高圧木毛セメント板を耐震要素として建物の四隅に配置し、意匠性を兼ね備えた耐震補強を実現しました。また、床下をチャンバーとすることで、市販のエアコンを床拭き出し空調として活用する設計としています。既存の建具を残しつつ、ポリカーボネートの新しい建具を追加することで、低コストの省エネ改修のあり方を模索しました。

The building which houses the research laboratory is a refurbished 100 year old fishing gear warehouse. Providing adequate seismic performance was very important. We used high-pressure wood fiber cement boards in the four corners of the building’s interior as reinforcement, which also doubled as interior design elements. We also needed to provide appropriate air-conditioning, heating and insulation in a low-cost way. The elevated floor of the office created an air chamber underneath which circulates air from two affordable air conditioners, and while existing wooden fixtures were kept, their insulation was improved by new polycarbonate sliding doors.

地域ラボと同様の耐震補強を行い、既存の土壁の素材感と呼応した空間としています。耐震補強のスパンと、既存建物から残った欄間のスパンは異なりますが、その大きさの違う空間が同時に存在することで、あたかも輪郭が動的に揺らぐような空間体験となりました。二つのスパンの違いは、素材の違いでもあり、まちの歴史を残しつつ、新しい公共的な場所を作り出しています。このレストランは、漁師の家族がシーフードを提供することで、海と陸の接点となります。
Seafood restaurant & café SERENO
The restaurant serves seafood by the family of a local fisherman and it is housed in a traditional Japanese house. The most important consideration was seismic retrofitting. We employed high-pressure wood fiber boards for the sheer walls and steel bracing. The wood fiber boards were chosen because they matched the feel of the existing mud walls. The required location of the seismic retrofitting elements by the structural engineer did not match the configuration of the existing columns and beams, which resulted in an entanglement of old and new spaces, and materials. One almost feels as if the outlines of the space are trembling. Because we conceived the restaurant as a gathering space, an extension of the town itself, the floor level was made flush with the street. The result is a new public space where the history of the town is still present.
