講義棟などが立地するアカデミックゾーンの軸線の突き当たりに位置する建築である。
この建築の検討が始まった当初から、当時学長を務められていたデサイ先生はこの建物を「Library」ではなく「Knowledge Center」と呼んでいた。ビルディングタイプとしては図書館に位置付けられる建物だが、書物だけではなく、あらゆる種類の知識に触れることができる場所としてこの建築を想定していたからだと思う。私はこの考え方がとても素晴らしいと思った。
そこであらゆるタイプの知識を俯瞰するための空間形式として、大きな谷のような地形を建築の中に作り出そうと考えた。この建築内の谷地形は、それぞれが異なる大きさと放物線を有するアーチによって支えられている。
さらに、この地形状の空間の上部には、4枚のHPシェルで構成される大屋根をかけ、そのシェルの隙間から入る自然光が知識の谷を照らし出すようにと考えた。
This building is located at the end of the axis of the academic zone, where lecture halls and other facilities are located.
From the very beginning of the planning process, Professor Desai, who was the president at the time, referred to this building as a “Knowledge Center” rather than a “Library.” Although the building is classified as a library, I believe he envisioned it as a place where people could access not only books but all kinds of knowledge. I found this concept to be truly remarkable.
Therefore, I conceived of a spatial form resembling a large valley within the building to provide an overview of all types of knowledge. The valley-like terrain within the building is supported by arches of varying sizes and parabolic shapes.
Additionally, a large roof composed of four HP shells was designed to span the upper portion of this terrain, with natural light filtering through the gaps in the shells to illuminate the valley of knowledge.
