A point of balance between spirit and tourism

Religion and tourism, past and future, monumentality and amusement- the site for this project is a place of contradictions. It called for architecture which would acknowledge and value this complexity. While it balances between protecting the lives and wellbeing of the visitors and connecting them with nature, we strived to create a place where one could gather essential knowledge about volcanos.

Since ancient times Mt. Onotake has been an object of worship. Thus, we felt it appropriate to organize the project around what we call thel “prayer axis”. This axis faces Mt. Onotake and is the main approach to an existing temple. We proposed a “prayer axis” observation deck on the roof of the new building, creating a connection between the mountain and the architecture. The deck will also be accessible directly from the parking lot. In this way we not only provide convenient access for visitors but also allow them to feel Mt. Onotake`s presence up close.

In recent years natural parks have become the means to satisfy the growing need contact with nature. As a gateway to a natural park our proposal aims to create a living exhibition which will connect people with nature. We imagine a space where the active volcano, alpine plants, the beautiful scenery and charm of the natural park can be enjoyed by anybody through easy-to-understand art and information technology. Our goal is to allow visitors to understand nature and protect and promote the use of natural parks.
